Fairfield's four colonial squares
Roger Ludlow bought the land the Paugussett called Unquowa in 1639, then divided the new settlement into four "squares" — Newton, Frost, Burr, and his own — linked by five roadways that still shape the Historic Town Green today.
Old streets, a modern water main
Those Town Green streets now sit inside the coastal service territory the old Bridgeport Hydraulic Company began expanding with new reservoir pressure in the 1870s, so most Fairfield homes run on a public main rather than a well — but on the oldest Green-adjacent lots, that main often connects to a service line nobody has touched since a mid-20th-century renovation. Confirming what material runs from the curb to the house is usually the first real step on these blocks.
