Map before opening
Find the main shutoff, the water heater, visible pipe runs, fixture groups, and cleanouts, then trace the line from the symptom back to the stack.
Respect the building
Black Rock, the East Side, the North End, Brooklawn, and the South End grew with different housing patterns. Coastal weather and layers of renovation make local context practical rather than decorative. Opening plaster, brick, or trim in any of these blocks calls for an access plan and a restoration plan worked out up front.
Prepare for winter
Check exterior hose bibs, pipes running through unheated basements or crawlspaces, and any exposed runs before the coastal cold sets in.
