Westport's Bankside Farmers
The Bankside Farmers settled Green's Farms in 1648, and for nearly two centuries the land that became Westport stayed split between Fairfield to the east and Norwalk to the west of the Saugatuck River. Local residents — Daniel Nash among them — petitioned the legislature for independence, and Westport was carved out and officially named on May 28, 1835.
A river whose name means water crossing
"Saugatuck" comes from an Algonquian word for "outlet from a tidal river," and the downtown corridor that grew up as Saugatuck Village around that crossing still holds some of the town's oldest plumbing runs — a mix of historic waterfront cottages and later estate-era additions tied into water service at different points across the 20th century.
